Mission

The Florida State University College of Medicine Surgical Critical Care Fellowship provides rigorous clinical training within a collaborative academic environment to prepare surgeons for independent practice as surgical intensivists. Through progressive responsibility, evidence-based education, scholarly activity, and faculty mentorship, the program develops the clinical judgment, technical expertise, and professionalism required to deliver exceptional care for critically ill and injured patients.

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the Florida State University College of Medicine Surgical Critical Care Fellowship.

Surgical critical care is a specialty defined by responsibility. Caring for critically ill and injured patients requires thoughtful clinical judgment, decisive leadership, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. As surgical intensivists, we are entrusted with guiding patients and their families through some of the most challenging moments in medicine while leading multidisciplinary teams dedicated to delivering the highest quality care.

Our philosophy is that outstanding surgical intensivists are developed through experience, mentorship, and progressive responsibility. Fellowship should challenge you to think independently, refine your clinical judgment, and become a confident leader capable of managing the most complex surgical critical illness. Throughout your training, our faculty are committed to providing the guidance, support, and opportunities necessary for your professional growth.

As the tertiary referral center for North Florida and South Georgia, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare provides fellows with broad exposure to complex surgical critical illness, traumatic injury, and emergency general surgery, preparing graduates for independent practice across a wide range of clinical settings.

About the Program

The Florida State University College of Medicine Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare provides advanced training in the comprehensive management of critically ill and injured patients. Built upon the partnership between Florida State University College of Medicine and Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, the fellowship combines the educational resources of an academic medical institution with the clinical experience of a high-volume regional referral center.

The one-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship prepares surgeons for independent practice in surgical critical care through progressive clinical responsibility, multidisciplinary collaboration, and close faculty mentorship. Fellows gain extensive experience in trauma, surgical critical care, neurocritical care, cardiovascular critical care, medical critical care, and emergency general surgery while caring for patients with a broad range of complex surgical diseases.

Education extends beyond the bedside through a comprehensive curriculum that emphasizes evidence-based practice, scholarly activity, quality improvement, and lifelong learning. Graduates are prepared to become leaders in surgical critical care, whether pursuing careers in academic medicine, regional trauma centers, or community practice.
