Faculty members and student recognized by Florida family physicians

As in past years, most of the physicians elected or honored at the annual meeting of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians have a link to the College of Medicine.

Among them were the honorees for Family Physician of the Year, Family Physician Executive, and both the full-time and part-time Educators of the Year – in addition to the new president of the FAFP board of directors.

Here are the College of Medicine physicians, plus one student, who made headlines, in alphabetical order:

  • Christie Alexander, M.D. (alumna, Class of 2005; assistant professor at main campus) – vice president, FAFP board of directors; member, FAFP Foundation board member.
  • Nicole Bentze, D.O. (clerkship director for family medicine, Sarasota campus) – recognized with degree of Fellow. “Fellows” have distinguished themselves among their colleagues, as well as in their communities, by service to family medicine, by advancement of health care to the American people, and by professional development through medical education and research.
  • George Bernardo, M.D. (education director, family medicine, for the College of Medicine and also clerkship director, family medicine, for the Daytona Beach campus) – FAFP board member.
  • Michelle Brandhorst, M.D. (clerkship faculty, Pensacola campus) – president-elect, FAFP board of directors; FAFP Foundation board member.
  • Rob Campbell, M.D. (associate dean for student affairs at main campus) – FAFP board member.
  • Danielle Carter, M.D. (clerkship faculty, Daytona Beach campus) – FAFP board member; alternate AAFP delegate.
  • Christina Cavanagh, M.D. (assistant professor, Family Medicine Residency Program, College of Medicine/Lee Memorial) – FAFP board member.
  • Wes Driggers, M.D. (clerkship faculty, Daytona Beach campus) – Family Physician of the Year.
  • Nathan Falk, M.D. (clerkship faculty, Orlando campus) – recognized with degree of Fellow.
  • Kris Gray, M.D. (clerkship faculty, Daytona Beach campus) – Family Physician Executive Award. For FAFP members whose executive skills in health-care organizations have contributed to excellence in the provision of high-quality health care.
  • Suzanne Harrison, M.D., (professor, main campus) – Exemplary Full-Time Educator of the Year.
  • Hillary Hultstrand, M.D. (Program in Medical Sciences alumna, Class of 2001; clerkship director, family medicine, Pensacola campus) – Exemplary Part-Time Educator of the Year; recognized with degree of Fellow.
  • Ajoy Kumar, M.D. (clerkship faculty, Sarasota campus) – president, FAFP board of directors; American Academy of Family Physicians delegate; FAFP Foundation board member.
  • Alma Littles, M.D. (senior associate dean for medical education and academic affairs) – AAFP delegate; vice president, FAFP Foundation board of directors.
  • Dennis Mayeaux, M.D. (clerkship director-geriatrics, Pensacola campus) – president, FAFP Foundation board of directors.
  • Tatianna Pizzutto (fourth-year student, Sarasota campus, pictured here) – FAFP student director.
  • Diana Twiggs, M.D. (PIMS alumna, Class of 1994; preceptor at the Daytona Beach campus) – chair, FAFP board of directors; FAFP Foundation board member.
  • Carrie Vey, M.D. (clerkship faculty, Daytona Beach campus) – FAFP board member; FAFP Foundation board member.
  • Gary Visser, M.D. (alum, Class of 2007; clerkship faculty, Orlando campus) – FAFP board member; recognized with degree of Fellow.
