Job Description

Dr. Watson is responsible for developing and implementing the clinical presentation model in the College of Medicine curriculum and teaches in the area of neurosciences. His experience in curriculum development will serve to achieve integration of basic and clinical sciences in order to help foster critical thinking skills in College of Medicine students while also promoting evidence-based approaches to common clinical presentations/problems.

Biosketch

Dr. Watson has served as a professor of neurology, neuroscience and clinical psychology for more than three decades, during which time he has been recognized as an outstanding teacher and student advocate. He is an acknowledged authority on curriculum, and among his many published articles he wrote "Rediscovering the Medical School" for the July 2003 issue of Academic Medicine. Dr. Watson helped develop the concept and is considered the "grandfather" of mission-based budgeting. As such, he has provided talks and workshops at numerous medical schools, AAMC meetings and other professional meetings on mission-based budgeting, curriculum and the continuum of medical education. Among the numerous teaching awards he has received, Dr. Watson was chosen as recipient of the 2005 Association of American Medical Colleges Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award. The award is the highest national recognition given for contributions to the education mission. Dr. Watson served as Senior Associate Dean for Educational Affairs at the University of Florida College of Medicine for 17 years. In that role, he was delegated authority for undergraduate medical, physician assistant, graduate biomedical, graduate medical and continuing medical education. He also served as the Jules B. Chapman, M.D. Professor in Clinical Care and Humaneness for 12 years. He served as Vice Chair of the Department of Neurology until 2008.
