2008-09 Faculty Development Policy
Faculty Development Policy for FSU COM
Effective: July 1, 2008
The following guidelines have been established for physicians who
have been appointed to the clinical faculty of the Florida State
University College of Medicine. These programs and workshops have
been developed to enhance your skills as a teacher and mentor of
medical students in the third and fourth year of medical training.
Category I: Clerkship Faculty Who Teach Year 3 & 4 Required
Clerkships
Initial Two Year Appointment
-
Complete six (6) hours of faculty development training
prior
to teaching a student. These hours can be completed by attending
three prescribed 2-hour workshops entitled, 1) Introduction to the FSUCOM Clinical Education Program, 2) Introduction to Clinical
Teaching, and 3) Evaluation Strategies: Nuts & Bolts. Under
extenuating circumstances completion of prescribed modules (CD and
on-line) or meetings with the campus Dean can be substituted for
attendance at workshop.
-
Before the end of this two year period, complete 4 additional hours
of faculty development, 2 of which should be at a live session.
This means that a new faculty member will need to accumulate a total
of 10 hours during the initial 2-year appointment period.
Subsequent Appointment Periods
Category
II: Elective Faculty or Faculty Teaching Selective Portions of
Required Clerkships
Initial Two Year Appointment
Complete a 2-hour orientation on the Introduction to the FSU COM
Clinical Education Program prior to teaching a student. This can be
done via a workshop, through online sessions, or by meeting with
appropriate Clerkship Director or campus Dean.
Subsequent Appointment Period
Faculty development encouraged but not required.
At any time during the course of a clinical faculty appointment,
physicians may earn faculty development hours through approved
meetings with Clerkship Directors, Campus Deans and Education
Directors. CME is awarded for all faculty development workshops and
is usually awarded for structured group meetings led by Education
Directors when they meet with clerkship faculty.
