Technology Demonstration & Discussion Series

Topic Description
Blackboard I

This session will focus on site design considerations and strategies. It is intended as a basic overview of ways to create, upload and effectively arrange instructional content within a Blackboard site. Site layout will be discussed along with various methods for uploading site content or linking to content from the Content Collection. Assignment creation and submission options will be described. The Adaptive Release tool will be demonstrated as a content release strategy based on stacked rules where content is released to students in relation to their assignment submission, date and time specifications.

Blackboard II This session will focus on Blackboard collaboration tools and strategies. Blackboard offers a suite of online synchronous and asynchronous communication tools. Explore strategies for leveraging Blackboard’s communication tools to maximize group interaction. Blackboard enables instructors to create learning groups or project teams with the option of giving groups access to their own discussion board, virtual classroom, group file exchange, and group e-mail. Discuss strategies for incorporating group collaboration tools into your course and consider how other faculty have used collaboration tools in their courses.
Camtasia Studio

Camtasia Studio is an easy to use screen recording technology that dynamically captures what is displayed on your screen--including onscreen drawings, cursor movements, drop down menus, pop-up windows, etc.--and then produces a video. Instructor audio can be captured while you are recording screen video or can be added later. Camtasia Studio integrates with PowerPoint for recording slide presentations along with annotations and audio narrations. Camtasia Studio offers various editing and rendering options to different file output formats such as demonstrated in this sample presentation output to Flash, Windows and iPod media formats.

EndNote Web

This session will provide a basic overview of and introduction to using EndNote Web. Beginning with account creation and customizing your database list, we will describe and demonstrate the main functions and ways of using EndNote Web to conveniently search for references, import references into designated groups, employ the cite while you write feature with Word, alternate between EndNote Web and EndNote applications, and easily change citation format styles.

FSUCOM e-Library This session will provide an overview of library e-resources: e-books, e-journals, evidence-based medicine resources, drug resources, patient education resources, medical images and PDA resources. The library has developed several graphical webpages and tools to familiarize you with primary sources. Some of these include the "Find Medical Information - Start Here" link, the library blog, the library wiki, short online tutorials, a library toolbar and quick search boxes located on the homepage that will take you directly to the content of most of the library e-resources including scholarly articles and book chapters.
IRB Approval Process This session will take participants through the process of applying for IRB approval of an educational project using the FSU site required for the submission process. A completed IRB submission will be shared. Explanation of why a project does or does not require IRB approval will be provided. Tips for designing and describing a sound and meaningful project that can be considered "educational scholarship" will be discussed.
Podcasting/Vodcasting

Podcasting involves capturing and distributing audio content via an RSS “feed” that enables subscription and automatic downloading of new audio content to an MP3 player. Vodcasting involves capturing and distributing video on demand content, with or without audio, via an RSS “feed.” In this session, we will demonstrate the process for creating podcasts with Audacity, a free audio recording/editing software, and show how vodcasts and podcasts can be created using other programs such as Camtasia. We will also demonstrate how podcasts and vodcasts can be distributed using Blackboard to create an RSS feed which enables individuals to access, subscribe and download content via the iTunes player even if they are not logged into Blackboard.

Second Life

Second Life is a multiuser virtual environment in which the users are represented as avatars interacting in a user-built 3D environment. There is great interest in this among the health care professions; the following links will give a better idea of some of the applications:

Skype Skype allows realtime voice and video interaction via the web as well as a host of additional plugin capabilities like whiteboarding and call recording, and most basic services are free. It can be used for instructor office hours and to present guest lectures, among other things.
SnagIt: Using SnagIt, you can capture what is displayed on your screen and save it as an image file to your computer, or to your clipboard, for pasting into another document. SnagIt’s editor allows you to crop or resize, adjust color, and add arrows, lines, highlights, text, callouts, or a clickable link. One can also output to Flash with hotspots that can display text or graphics when hovered over such as utilized in this floor plan and incorporate links such as embedded in this organizational chart.
Student e-Portfolios This session will address the purpose of e-Portfolios for students. The various content areas of the student portfolio will be illustrated. Participants will learn how to locate and enter the student portfolios of their advisees. We will consider how advisors can use e-Portfolio information as a source for discussions with their advisees. We all also consider how e-Portfolios can be employed to promote student self-reflection and evaluation.
Surveys/Assessments This session will focus on the creation of online surveys and assessments. We will identify the various types of questions that can be created in such programs as Blackboard, Sharepoint, and SurveyMonkey. We will also describe online survey and assessment features and options with respect to design layout, response collection and results analysis.
